ERCOT market
Lubbock Power & Light (LP&L) completed its transition to the competitive ERCOT market in January 2024. LP&L no longer sells electricity to customers — it operates as a distributor only, owning and maintaining the lines, reading meters, and restoring outages. Residents of Lubbock now choose a licensed retail electric provider for the electricity itself, just like the rest of the competitive Texas market.

FAQ
No. As of January 2024, LP&L completed its move to the competitive market and now operates as a distributor only. You choose a retail electric provider for your plan.
Choose a retail electric provider and give them your address and start date. They arrange the connection with LP&L.
Call LP&L. LP&L owns the lines and restores outages. Your retail provider handles billing and your plan.
LP&L delivery charges cover the poles, wires, meters, and outage response. They appear on your bill and are the same no matter which retail provider you choose.
Not necessarily. Some nearby addresses are served by other utilities or co-ops. Confirm by ZIP or call us.
A TDSP (Transmission and Distribution Service Provider) is the regulated utility that owns the poles, wires and meters, reads your meter and restores power after an outage. It does not sell you an electricity plan and its delivery charges are the same whichever retail provider you choose. Your TDSP depends on your service address — in some areas more than one utility serves the same city — so confirm it by ZIP code or call us for a free check.
A retail electric provider (REP) is the licensed company that sells you the electricity itself: it sets the rate per kWh, the contract term and the fees on your plan, and it bills you. In the ERCOT market you can shop and switch between REPs freely, while your TDSP keeps delivering the power, so switching never means new wires, a new meter or a service interruption.
